Twitter is a great place to meet new people. Do you know what to do with your new Twitter followers? There are so many things you can do with the information you’re given. The most important thing not to do is SPAM them with your information. You’ll lose them quicker then anything else if you do, so it’s best to stay away from that.
When it comes to SPAM you may be doing it and not even realize it. If you send direct messages (DM) all the time with your link or information about your business and they aren’t asking for it, that’s SPAM. If you reply to messages your followers post and add your link to their post, that’s SPAM. If you continually reply to posts your followers make and always include your link that could be considered SPAM.
Contacting your followers is a good idea. They want to know you care and you’re happy they are following you. There are a couple of ways you can do this. They are all good, so you’ll have to decide which one will work best for you.
One of the easiest ways to contact your new followers is to use Social Oomph for auto DM’s. Social Oomph has the ability to automatically send all of your new followers a message that you create. This means you won’t have to do anything, but you’ll still have the contact.
The downside to Social Oomph is minimal to a point. You’ll find there are spammers that set up Twitter accounts and then they follow people. So you’d be making contact with them if you set up an auto DM message. The other downside to automated DM messages is you can’t personalize them. You’ll have to create a generic message and hope it fits everyone.
If you are the type of person that enjoys personally talking to everyone, then you need to consider sending a DM to each of your followers. You should visit their Twitter page so you can learn a little about them, then send the message and include something you learned while on their page. While this takes some time, it will be worth it in the long run.
One last option to consider is making a public post and include their screen name in the post. Here’s an example: Thanks for the follow @WAHCheck . All of your followers will see it and may want to follow them as well.
Trust is a hard thing to build in the online community. You can’t see the person face to face and you can’t shake their hand, so you must do what you can to make people feel comfortable with you. One way to do that is to communicate with them. So the next time you have a new follower on Twitter, make sure you communicate with them via DM or public post.
